Those Left Awake / Poetry by Sylvia Yoon Kim

1.

There’s a light that turns on outside

At night

Beneath the blanket that chills

Those caught outdoors

It signals to the living

The light is on

The light is on

Gather

Those who are tired

Gather

Those who are broken

Gather

Those left awake

Some people need to feel

The ice between the stars

And humans standing

To touch the in between

Catch a glimpse of it

Gather

The restless

Gather

The people willing to create

With their own hands

And see

And see

The particles that dance

With color

When we

Exhale

When we exhale

2.

Scoffers and mockers

Sit on doorsteps

Waiting for those

Who wish to enter

Step right up they say

Yes step right up

To the circus

Which will be your

Un-doing

The only failure

Is not doing

Scoffers and mockers

Sit on the doorsteps

To your mind mansions

Awaiting are your chariots

Look how they glisten with flames

Which will take you to limbo they say

Limbo land

Land unknown

Limbo land unspoken

Unbeknownst

To the waiters

Choosing to

Sit

Down

The door was always open
